What is the Umoja Health Project?

The Umoja Health Project is a health education collaborative of young professionals and activists seeking to inspire and empower youth to pursue the health professions. Umoja is a Swahili term that means unity, and the mission of this project is to bring the communities of Los Angeles closer together to be with and for others, especially for the marginalized and underserved.

Why health & medicine?

In Black and Brown communities, the spirit of unifying and organizing has been essential to our progress in civil rights, human rights, and revolution. We see access to care as a human right, and recognize that one of the ways to challenge health disparities in our community is by investing in the pipeline of diverse future leaders that will become advocates for health equity.

What we do.

Currently, the Umoja Health Project operates as health exposures program at Westchester Enriched Sciences Magnet. Through non-traditional educational engagements and experiential learning, this program not only encourages students to pursue health related careers, but also facilitates their development into empowered student leaders that will lead the new generation of healthcare professionals.
